Look Inside

Look Inside One of the neat features of the Amazon online bookstore is Look Inside the Book or simply Look Inside. This applies to both kindle and paperback books.

The basic idea is that a reader can view a book's description. With the description will be an image of the book cover. By clicking on the image, you can view a sample of the book, typically the first 10%.

Regarding kindle books, there is another major difference between this sample and the complete book. Page breaks are removed.

Another important difference between Look Inside and the complete book, is that they use different programs to view them.

I have had an ongoing issue with some of the chess diagrams when viewed with Look Inside. The issue does not arise when reading the complete eBook.

The way I have done done the diagrams has some large advantages:

  • Colour diagrams can be used without the file size bloating to 150 meg and more.
  • A smaller file size means a quicker download time.
  • Diagrams are easier for me to create and edit.

This is it how it is meant to look. Most of my books are like this when viewed with Look Inside.

This is how it sometimes looks. You can see the large gaps between the rows. This is despite graphics being done in he same (or similar) way for all books. After a long struggle I have found one possible cause. It is determined by what point in the book the 10% is reached.

Note that the last two squares on the board are missing. If the 10% limit cuts through a diagram, all the diagrams in the book are being corrupted.

If the end of the first 10% does not cut through a diagram, then the diagrams are not corrupted. Note also that sometimes the diagrams don't work correctly in low resolution, but work when the screen resolution is increased.

Mostly Look Inside is working for my eBooks. In a few cases they don't. Don't panic, those large gaps between the rows are not in the complete eBook. I am still working on how to resolve this issue entirely.
